Safety and Health

Petkim is under the scope of "National Regulation on Risk Groups List for Work Health and Safety", which is published by "Ministry of Labor and Social Security". Since some of the materials used in our production facilities are inflammable and explosive, Petkim is classified in the 5th Risk Group due to this regulation. Many preventive measures are taken to protect our staff, environment and region from the possible dangers that may occur at the Labor hood during the production, handling, usage, storage and transportation of chemicals in our process: - Risks are controlled in production steps by following the technology development and renew equipment continuously with safer one, and preferring available less dangerous chemicals. - Risk management is based on the precaution principle - Personnel protective measures for employers are very important in Petkim and Personal Protective Equipments (PPE) having "CE" identity signs are used in our facilities. To take the precautions mentioned above Environment and Safety Management was established at Petkim. Safety management service is carried out by the expert engineer and technicians for 24 hour in shifts.

Our Company’s Health and Safety Management is carried out within the Integrated Management System which includes ISO 9001 Quality Management System, OHSAS 18001 Work Health and Safety Management and ISO 14001 Environment Management System.

Work health and safety policy of Petkim

We commit;
- To minimize work accidents in our production process,
-To focus on work health and safety in all our facilities
- To control and minimize the risks in production facilities,
- To fulfill our legal responsibilities stated in work health and safety regulations.
- To set up goals those develop our work health and safety performance continuously,
- To improve our emergency response system as capable in the possible worst conditions.
- To instruct the public and the other stakeholders about our facility.

Monitoring Sensors

Different kind of gas sensors set up through the working areas to monitor toxic, flammable and explosive, hazardous chemicals. Beyond, the complex area is controlled periodically by fixed and portable detectors indicating gas leakages through the defined critical points. There are also fixed smoke sensors for fire detection.

Periodical Controls

As required in The National Work Law_4857, atmospheric or pressurized confined spaced areas, pipe lines and the other equipments at process areas are controlled and tested periodically by both outsource commission and internal committees.

Work Permissions

It is not allowed to do works that may cause ignition for fire, explosion and poisoning without permission. Listed works at the following are done under the surveillance by Technical Safety and Fire Control Units:
- Welding, cutting, drilling, thermal processing that may cause ignition,
- Works in the confined areas like columns, tanks, reactors, boilers, drums, furnaces, manholes etc. and may cause toxic poisoning.
- Building the scaffolds during plant maintenance works.
- Excavation works at plants, pipe channels and the other places.

In our Company all staff is taking the training courses on work safety either by external or internal sources.

Theoretical and practical courses are given to fire response teams in every Tuesdays and the technical staffs in plants are trained about work safety every Tuesday and Wednesdays. Contractor/subcontractor personnel and interns are also obliged to take these courses due to the regulations as well. The number of work accident and lost work days has been decreasing continuously since 1985 as a result of these courses. Our goal is to minimize the number of work accidents at least possible level.

Periodical Health Control

Health Control of our staff are done periodically as 3, 6, 12 months to monitor the effects of hazardous substances on workers. These studies are done by Petkim Medical Service in coordination with technical measurement and control in plant site.

Precautions Against Fire

Petkim has owned 10 industrial fire fighting vehicles that are capable for all kinds of fire. Fire response teams can be present in 3 minutes even for the most far reaching plant site Fire water is supplied by 6 pumps from the Petkim Dam which was built by Petkim in establishment in 1980's.

Beside, 3 more diesel fire pump system were set up for the emergency condition so that sea water can be also used for fire fighting Fire water network has 1112 hydrant valves. 3000 portable fire extinguishers are also present in plant sites as first attack. Some tanks having higher risks were equipped with automatically extinguishing and cooling systems with environmentally friendly CFI wet-gas and foam.

A fire practice based on the planned scenario is done in each month at a plant. All practices are done by related personnel who have to be prepared for ever to the emergency conditions.
